Deaths do not stop in the mountains in Italy – News

Illnesses, falls of hundreds or sometimes thousands of meters, fatal accidents at high altitude. People still die in the mountains, even in the last hours. From the catastrophes among the peaks of Valle Gesso, Alps Mara, to the one on Mount Prena, Gran Sasso.

The latest discovery is the body of Lewin Weituschat, a 25-year-old student who had been missing for several days. The young man was walking alone on the Via del Centenario, which from Vado di Corno reaches Fonte Vetica, when, after reaching the north side of Prena, he slipped into the gorge.

There are already eight mountain victims in Abruzzo in 2024, five in August alone. A higher number than last year’s total. And the toll from an accident on the Swiss side of the Matterhorn was one dead and one injured, where the mountain had returned three more bodies after the mid-August holiday. In this case, the team that was made up of the two climbers fell yesterday, around noon, for about 70 meters from the east face.

The two were going on the Hörnli ridge and fell while they were at an altitude of 4,100 meters. While it was Thursday, east of the Matterhorn, two people died on the Swiss side of the Monte Rosa massif in a paragliding accident. They were on top of the Breithorn when they had trouble leaving, before falling hundreds of meters. Victims also occurred in Friuli Venezia Giulia where a 65-year-old man was found yesterday afternoon on a shooting trip in Moggio Udinese. The cause of death was probably an illness and some hikers raised the alarm after noticing the body at an altitude of a thousand meters, in the Jama area.

But the deaths in the mountains have been counted since the beginning of the week. In the mountains of Valle Gesso, in the area of Cuuno, two hikers lost their lives within a few days. The first is a man who had not returned from a trip: his body was found on Monday in the Valcuca region. The second is Daniele Pacini, a 34-year-old climber, who fell on Wednesday while climbing Spigolo Vernet, NASA’s summit. The woman who was climbing with him was left hanging and was slightly injured. Also in Piedmont, the body of a 74-year-old man was found in a valley in Val Cannobina, in the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola region. The night before he had not returned home after going fishing.
