Death truck driver Essex “unaware” of migrants in truck | Abroad

Truck driver Eamonn Harrison, who transported the container to Zeebrugge where 39 dead Vietnamese were discovered last year, said in court in London today that he is devastated but was unaware that the migrants were in the container .

On October 23, 2019, 39 lifeless bodies, including three minors, were discovered in a refrigerated truck in Grays, a town in Essex, England. It soon became apparent that the container had arrived in Zeebrugge the day before. It turned out to be deposited there by the now 23-year-old Eamonn Harrison. The container was then transported from Zeebrugge to Purfleet by 26-year-old Maurice Robinson.

In court in London, Northern Irish Harrison stated that he was devastated for their families and that he felt bad, but that he had no idea that the victims were in the dumpster.

Harrison is charged with unintentional manslaughter and illegal immigration on Oct. 11 and 18, 2019, but he disputes those charges.

He was also arrested in May 2018 by the border police when they discovered 18 Vietnamese migrants in his truck. He stated in court that he had called his boss Ronan Hughes and they both fell out of the blue. He was eventually able to resume his journey after being fined.

40-year-old Ronan Hughes is the main suspect in the case along with Maurice Robinson. They have both pleaded guilty and will have to appear in court later.

Three other suspects have been on trial in London for accidental manslaughter or assistance with illegal immigration since early October. In addition to Harrison, the British-Romanian Gheorge Nica (43) has also been accused of unintentional manslaughter of 39 people. 24-year-old Christopher Kennedy and 37-year-old Valentin Calota have to answer for assistance with illegal immigration.
