Death Toll Rises to Nine in China Earthquake, Prefabricated Housing Arrives for Displaced

The death toll from Thursday’s earthquake rose to nine as search teams dug through landslides in two villages, a city official in Qinghai province said Friday morning. Three people are still missing in the landslides caused by the earthquake.

State broadcaster CCTV showed how the factory-made one-room houses were lowered into an open field in the Gansu province’s Meipo city with overhead cranes. About 260 such dwellings were installed on Thursday, but their number was expected to reach 500 by Friday morning.

The arrival of prefabricated temporary housing was a sign that many of the more than 87,000 people displaced by the earthquake will be without their homes for some time to come.

At least 144 people have died and around 1,000 have been injured in a powerful earthquake that hit northwest China overnight on Tuesday.

The shallow earthquake occurred in Gansu Province near the border of Qinghai Province. The US Geological Survey estimated its strength at 5.9 magnitude, while the Xinhua news agency reported that it was 6.2 magnitude.

At least 113 people died in the earthquake in Gansu Province and 31 in Qinghai Province.
