Reuters reported that the death toll from an explosion at a gas station in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, where armed conflict broke out between Armenia and Azerbaijan last week, has risen to at least 68.
According to the news agency, the Karabakh Ombudsman Office announced yesterday (26th) that in addition to the deaths, 105 people were missing and about 300 were injured in the accident that occurred on the 25th.
The accident reportedly occurred as thousands of people and vehicles trying to flee Nagorno-Karabakh flocked to gas stations to get fuel.
Meanwhile, White House National Security Council (NSC) spokesman Adrian Watson said in a statement yesterday, “We offer our deepest condolences to the people of Nagorno-Karabakh and all who have suffered.”
He went on to say that the United States will continue to provide support to those affected while crossing from the region to Armenia.
Spokesperson Watson also explained that we are announcing additional emergency humanitarian support, including health care, for those affected by violence or who have lost their homes in the region, and that we are providing essential items such as hygiene products, blankets, and clothing.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) said it would provide $11.5 million in humanitarian assistance to the region.
The Armenian government reported on the 26th that about 28,000 of the approximately 120,000 Armenian residents in Nagorno-Karabakh have entered Armenia.
