The death toll from the earthquake in China has risen to 135 people, while ambulance personnel continue to deliver aid and equipment and the injured are treated in hospitals, three days after the disaster.
The earthquake occurred shortly before midnight on Monday, Tuesday, about 1,300 kilometers southwest of Beijing. The disaster affected Gansu Province, as well as neighboring Qinghai, but to a lesser extent.
Doctors at the Xixishan Canton Hospital in Gansu Province, near the epicenter of the earthquake, were treating the injured in a building showing damage caused by the earthquake.
A patient preparing for surgery on her leg told Agence France-Presse, “I want to return to my home. But my house was destroyed and I do not know where to go.”
An official in the Chichishan canton told Agence France-Presse, “People are still afraid of aftershocks. It is difficult for them to sleep as there is no safe place.”
Agence France-Presse reporters examined the large number of large blue tents that the authorities had set up in Chichishan to replace the hand-made tents that residents had set up after the earthquake.
According to the Center for Geological Studies in the United States, which is the most important reference in this context, the earthquake occurred at 23.59 local time on Monday evening (15.59 GMT) and its epicenter was about 100 kilometers from Lanzhou, the regional capital of Gansu.
This earthquake resulted in the largest number of deadliest casualties in the country since 2014, when an earthquake claimed the lives of more than 600 people in Yunnan Province (southwest).
