The recovery of the remains was accelerated after the search for survivors among the rubble was officially ended two weeks after the disaster.
It is still unclear what caused much of the apartment complex to collapse. Three years ago, there had already been a warning about structural problems at the property on the coast.
Local authorities in Miami say they have given up hope that living persons can be recovered from the rubble. “We have tried everything in this rescue operation. Nothing we can do now can bring back the lost people,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava.
The rescue teams involved, from Florida, Texas, Mexico and Israel, among others, agreed with the decision. In doing so, they acknowledged that they do not expect to find any more survivors among the rubble.
