The swarm of earthquakes that shook the Chinese region of Taiwan this Wednesday left at least nine people dead and some 821 injured, official sources reported.
Local authorities cited by Chinese media reported that the earthquakes, the most powerful of which had a magnitude of 7.4, caused, in addition to the deaths and injuries, 127 people who were trapped.
The most intense earthquake was recorded at 08:58 local time (23:58 GMT Tuesday) near the eastern coast of Taiwan, 18 kilometers south-southwest of the city of Hualien, and at a depth of 34.8 kilometers, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The entity indicated that after the 7.4 magnitude earthquake, the most powerful recorded in Taiwan in the last 25 years, more earthquakes occurred, with magnitudes ranging from 6.6 to 4.7.
Videos were spread on social networks showing numerous damaged buildings, landslides and changes in sea level.
Around 87,000 homes in Taiwan were left without power due to the earthquake. Meanwhile, it was reported that some 127 people are still trapped in the mountains of Taroko National Park, in Hualien county.
Due to these tremors, authorities in Japan and the Philippines decreed tsunami warnings as preventive measures, which were lifted hours later.
