Mass shootings unleash US insecurity
Deadly violence at this Texas school comes after other mass shootings in the United States this month.
On May 14, an 18-year-old man shot and killed 10 people at a Buffalo, New York grocery store. Wearing a heavy bulletproof vest and carrying an AR-15 rifle, the self-proclaimed white supremacist allegedly live streamed his attack.
He reportedly planned it for months, targeting the store because of the large African-American population that surrounds it.
The next day, a man blocked the door of a church in Laguna Woods, California and opened fire on his Taiwanese-American congregation, killing one person and wounding five.
The shooter, who was working as a security guard in Las Vegas, targeted people out of “politically motivated hate…(and) was upset about political tensions between China and Taiwan,” according to Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes. .
Despite recurring mass shootings and a national wave of gun violenceMultiple initiatives to reform gun regulations have failed in the US Congress, leaving states and local councils to enact their own restrictions.
United States registered 19 thousand 350 homicides with firearms in 2020, almost 35% more than in 2019, according to the most recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the main US public health agency.
