just before the release the director’s version of ‘Death Stranding’, Kojima Productions revealed that the game reached the mark of 5 million copies sold in March of this year. The game was released in November 2019, initially for PlayStation 4. Then, in July of last year, it got a PC version.
The numbers were revealed by Jay Boor, head of publishing at Kojima Productions. He highlighted that the title had a “very good” performance. This makes the studio very optimistic about the release of ‘Director’s Cut’, for PlayStation 5, in September.

“With ‘Death Stranding’ being the first title developed from Kojima Productions, from a sales perspective, it performed very well. In March 2021, ‘Death Stranding’ sold more than five million units worldwide on PlayStation 4 and PC”, he said, in an interview with the website GamesIndustry.biz.

It’s also worth adding that ‘Metal Gear Solid 5’, Hideo Kojima’s last title when he was still at Konami developer, sold more than 6 million copies in December 2015. That number was reached in just a few months, on platforms.
The new version of ‘Death Stranding’, even though the title ‘Director’s Cut’ is not Hideo Kojima’s favorite, will not only have visual improvements. The game will gain new features, weapons and modes. The release of this edition should add much more sales to the game’s total by the end of this year.
On PS5, the game will have new missions in story mode, new combat mechanics, a shooting range and a race mode. “The goal of ‘Director’s Cut’ is to present new content that further expands the world within ‘Death Stranding’ while enhancing the core game experience and its features,” said Boor.
Another detail highlighted by the head of publishing at Kojima Productions is the Social Strand System. The multiplayer feature allows you to connect with players from anywhere in the world through various in-game actions.
“In addition, ‘Director’s Cut’ will also include visual and performance updates that take full advantage of the next-generation features of the PlayStation 5, as well as a variety of new content developed from scratch. We’re introducing new missions and additional storylines, more weapons, vehicles and equipment, we’ve even added a race mode and online leaderboards too,” he concluded.
