Death Stranding for Windows – Review – No picture

Apart from the question how the game runs on different systems, there is another question: how can the game be operated on a PC? Actually, we can be brief about that: just fine. Running, climbing, fighting: it all feels just as good as on a PlayStation 4. The menus are still cluttered, but that’s no different than on a PS4. Driving a car or motorcycle might have been a bit smoother, but the game does no worse in that than many other games in which you drive a vehicle with WSAD. Bending over and sneaking with alternating Ctrl and C is not so easy to combine with the W of anticipation, but the game is not exactly unique in that either.

And while we’re talking about the W: publisher 505 Games is allowed to put a new W-key in the game’s packaging. There are of course countless games in which you have your finger on the W almost continuously, but you usually perform the necessary actions in addition. Here there are large pieces where you only have your finger on the W, combined with some subtle movements of the mouse. Is that bad? That depends on whether you can bring the patience needed to appreciate Death Stranding. In any case, that will not be due to the operation.

Finally, we noticed that Death Stranding is not a game you want to play twice. The surprising gameplay makes it a very nice adventure the first time. But a second time, if the surprise is off, the many walks really become too much of a good thing. If you have already played the game on a PS4, it is no longer recommended to purchase the PC version. Incidentally, Kojima Productions has added some extras to the PC version. The studio has added some missions created in collaboration with Valve. The extra missions – there are a handful of them – all refer to Half-Life. It’s not about essential missions, of course, but it’s a nice extra. However, that too makes it not worth playing the game again.

Restrictions

Finally, a completely different point. Did you get the fuss about the reviews of The Last of Us II? Sony imposed all kinds of restrictions on reviewers, who were not allowed to release anything about two of the three Acts of the game. Sony also imposed restrictions on this review, but in this case mainly on the graphic level. We must not show anything about the game. At least, we may not use our own images, but only show images that Sony has made available. All images you see in this review are therefore from Sony. That also explains why you see so little image: Sony has no longer made available.

Conclusion

With that, the only question that remains is how to assess the PC version of Death Stranding. In our opinion, the answer is astonishingly simple: no different from the version for PlayStation 4. The port to PC is fine. There is actually little to nothing to say about that. The game effortlessly achieves a stable 30 fps on a system with the minimum recommended specifications, which are also not exceptionally high. The makers also clearly focus on 1080p / 30fps, which is not surprising for such a game, which is made for the current generation of consoles. If you want more – 60fps and 4k – then the game obviously has significantly higher requirements. But it is possible, with which you can take an advance on your PC on what is hopefully possible on the new generation of consoles soon. We can still fully agree with the content conclusion that we drew last year. In our opinion, the game also deserves the same rating as the original version.
