“While in April the mortality rate was even 28 percent higher, the May total of 9.3 thousand deaths corresponded to only five percent of the mortality rate,” said Terezie Štyglerová, head of the CZSO demographic statistics department.

Weekly deaths have been falling since mid-March, when 4,000 people died in a single week.

“While at the turn of April and May the weekly number of deaths was 2.5 thousand, at the end of the month it was already slightly below 2000 deaths, which corresponds to the average value from 2015 to 2019,” the statistics stated.

In May, lower mortality was recorded in people over 80 years of age. “However, the mortality rate of other seniors (under the age of 80) and middle-aged people is also very close to the average level from 2015 to 2019. Seventies and sixties had a mortality rate increased by only 4 percent in May this year, fifties by 6 percent, ”the CZSO said.
