Death penalty young wrestler Navid Afkari, Iran condemned the world

TEHERAN, KOMPAS.com – Young wrestler Iran, Navid Afkari has been executed after being found guilty of murdering a revolutionary guard during the 2018 anti-government protests, Iranian media said on Saturday (12/09/2020).

Launch The Guardian, Afkari was executed this morning after legal procedures were carried out at the insistence of the victim’s parents and family, said the head of the Justice Department of South Fars Province, Iran.

The case has previously drawn much criticism and protests from internationally. Afkari himself, according to family reports, said before the day of his execution that he was tortured to make false false statements.

In fact, there is no evidence whatsoever that points to the murder of the young wrestler.

Iranian courts have rejected the torture claims themselves.

Launch Daily MirrorThe global union representing 85,000 athletes on Tuesday also called for Iran to be expelled from the world sports union if Afkari is executed.

President of the United States (US) Donald Trump even asked Iran this month not to execute the wrestler.

He has called on the UN Human Rights Agency and EU member states to “intervene immediately” to help “save Navid Afkari from execution”.

Trump tweeted, “To the Iranian leaders, I would really appreciate it if you spare this young man’s life, and do not execute him.”

Earlier, in September 2019, Afkari filed a complaint with an Iranian court saying he was forced to give a false confession during “the most severe physical and psychological torture” during which he spent nearly 50 days in police custody.

In an open letter, Afkari wrote, “They covered my head with a plastic bag and nearly choked me to death.”

Iran says it executed a young wrestler on Saturday (12/09/2020), for killing a Civil Servant (PNS) at an anti-government demonstration in August 2018.

Navid Afkari was executed this morning in a prison in the southern city of Shiraz, said the provincial prosecutor, Kazem Mousavi, was quoted as saying AFP from the Iranian government tv website.

The 27-year-old man was found guilty of “unplanned murder” for stabbing Hossein Torkamn to death on August 2, 2018. Hossein is a civil servant in the Iranian irrigation department.
