Death of Yevgeny Prigojine, Boss of Wagner: Plane Crash in Russia

This Wednesday, August 20, Russia announced that Yevgeny Prigojine was on board a plane that crashed north of Moscow. If the death of the boss of Wagner were to be confirmed, Washington would not be surprised.

A spokeswoman for the US State Department said on Wednesday August 23 that “no one should be surprised” if the death of Yevgeny Prigojine was confirmed, while the name of the boss of the Russian paramilitary group Wagner appears on the passenger list of a private plane that crashed near Moscow.

The first information communicated by the Russian authorities indicates that all the passengers of the aircraft were killed in an accident. According to the manifest, seven passengers and three crew members were on board.

Reacting to this accident, US President Joe Biden said he did not know precisely what had happened. “But I’m not surprised,” he added. “Not much happens in Russia without (President Vladimir) Putin behind it, but I don’t know enough to know the answer.

Eight bodies found

Eight corpses have so far been found at the scene of the accident, the emergency services said, quoted by the official RIA news agency. Seven names, including that of Yevgeny Prigojine, appeared on the list of passengers for the aircraft, which also included three crew members.

There is no immediate confirmation that Yevgeny Prigojine, whose group has been a auxiliary of the Russian army in Ukraine while contesting the Russian military command, was physically in the device.
