Death of Vanilla: tale of an infanticide, first failure of the Abduction Alert system

It is the first time that the Abduction Alert device has had a fatal outcome. The body of the little Vanille, 1 year old, was discovered this Sunday afternoon in Angers (Maine-et-Loire) in a clothing bin.

The day before, almost thirty hours after the report of her disappearance, the alert had been triggered in order to find the trace of the little girl with brown curls and big black eyes, kidnapped by her mother. “Despite this tragic outcome, the device generated more than a hundred testimonies which made it possible to find the mother. The murder is prior to its release, “says the prosecutor of the Republic of Angers, Eric Bouillard.

A forensic doctor was dispatched this Sunday evening to the site of the macabre discovery, in order to determine the causes of this death which occurred in all likelihood as of Friday. Open for “removal of a minor by ascendant”, the investigation now relates to facts of “murder of a minor by ascendant”. The mother, Nathalie Stephan, was placed in police custody.

Vanilla was placed with a foster family

Using video surveillance and information from her phone, investigators from the Angers judicial police regional service were able to trace the journey of this 39-year-old woman with serious psychological problems.

Since Vanille’s birth, Nathalie Stephan has been welcomed in an apartment in the Angers maternal center. The 30-something could occasionally receive her daughter, who was placed with a foster family the rest of the time. Friday, while the Angevine had the right to care for her daughter for 48 hours straight, she left home at 11 am. She should have brought the child back to her child welfare worker at 5.30 p.m., but never showed up. It was during this time, between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., that the mother killed her daughter.

According to our information, the suspect said that she “smothered” Vanille while they were both in a park in Angers, before depositing her body in a clothing dumpster, where she ended up driving the investigators on Sunday.

No accomplice

At 3 p.m. Friday, Nathalie Stephan, described by a source close to the investigation as “having few friends and family,” left the city by train to go to Nantes, where she clearly had no fasteners. On CCTV images, it appears alone and without a stroller. Investigators therefore fear a tragic outcome to this abduction. The countdown begins.

The course of his day on Saturday is more obscure. The mother would have passed it to Nantes. According to initial investigations, she was not in physical or telephone contact with any accomplice.

A decisive testimony

At the end of the evening, when the child has not been found for thirty hours, the Abduction Alert is triggered by the Angers prosecutor’s office. The suspect’s name and photo are available on all TV channels and on the Internet. The system made it possible to gather around a hundred testimonies in a few hours. One will be decisive …
