The great Tunisian singer Safoua died on Friday, November 19, at the age of 76.
In an invitation published in the evening from Friday to Saturday, the Ministry of Cultural Affairs regretted the loss of a great icon of the Tunisian artistic and musical scene. Safoua, whose real name is Nabiha Gargouri, was born in the city of Sfax in 1945. The deceased was one of the great figures of the national music scene. This earned him the title of “the pearl of the South”, in reference to his hometown, the Capital of the South.
Safoua became known to the Tunisian public in the early 1960s. The late one began her musical career quite young, from her hometown.
She was barely 17 when she performed one of her first songs, the work of famous singer and songwriter Ahmed Hamza. She was then adopted by the famous artist Mohamed Jamoussi who accompanied her in her artistic journey until she was able to join the choir of the Radio and Television Establishment.
Thanks to her remarkable voice, she has succeeded in making a name for herself among music lovers in her native region. And then throughout Tunisia. “Yalli machi lil jazeera”, “Watani”, “Donya lina” are among his hit songs.
