Death of mother and child in the event of an avalanche accident in South Tyrol causes great dismay in Thuringia

The death of a woman and a child from the Kyffhäuserkreis in an avalanche accident on Saturday in South Tyrol caused great dismay in Thuringia. Norbert Eichholz, Mayor of the place of residence of the fatally injured, Hauteroda in the Kyffhäuserkreis, spoke of a shock for the local people on Sunday. “The compassion is very high,” he said. Thuringia’s Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow also expressed concern on Sunday. “There was great suffering here for a family who just wanted to take their well-deserved winter vacation,” he said.

The 35-year-old woman and her seven-year-old daughter had been buried by an avalanche on Saturday afternoon on the Teufelsegg slope in the Schnalstal ski area in Italy. In the afternoon, the woman could only be rescued dead by rescue workers; the child was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. It died there in the evening. Another seven-year-old girl who came from Eschweiler in North Rhine-Westphalia was also only recovered dead. In addition, a man and another child were injured in the accident.

The injured woman was a member of the Bundeswehr. A spokesman for the medical services command told MDR THÜRINGEN on Sunday that she had worked as a staff officer in the Bundeswehr barracks in Bad Frankenhausen. Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (CDU) and Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (CSU) expressed their sympathy to the relatives of the victims. “My thoughts and sympathy are with the relatives and friends of all victims of this terrible misfortune,” said Kramp-Karrenbrauer (CDU) on Twitter.

The death of the avalanche victims was also discussed on Sunday at the service in the Sankt-Marienkirche in Artern. Pastor Lena Luise Burghardt had accepted the sad news in the intercession. She spoke of “a distant event that comes so close and that it is hard to measure how incomprehensible it is when people go on vacation and coffins come back”. The participants in the service were dismayed.

Friends of the woman who had an accident, such as the Mayor of Am Ettersberg, Thomas Hess, also expressed concern:
