Al Fayed died at the age of 94.
“Mrs. Mohamed Al Fayed, children and grandchildren wish to confirm that beloved husband, father and grandfather, Mohamed, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 30, 2023,” the family said in a statement.
After arriving in the UK in the 1970s, Al Fayed made his way into London’s high society.
But he became increasingly controversial as he publicly fought for British citizenship, and even more so after the deaths of Diana and his son Dodi Fayed in Paris in 1997.
Al Fayed insisted for decades that the couple had been killed, despite investigations finding otherwise, and later in his life was contemptuous of the British royal family.
Al-Fayed was born in 1929 in Alexandria, Egypt, and took advantage of the entrepreneurial opportunities that opened up during his brief marriage to Samira Khashoggi, a Saudi writer and sister of billionaire arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi.
After partnering with Adnan Khashoggi and setting up his own shipping company, Al Fayed moved to London and began building an extensive real estate portfolio, focusing on the luxury sector. He also owned the famous Ritz hotel in Paris for four decades.
According to “Forbes” magazine, in 2021, his wealth was about 1.8 billion US dollars.
Al Fayed had six children.
