The death of Jean-François Charbonnier, following cancer, was announced by his former club on Monday, December 7, 2020. The Paris Saint Germain hailed the memory of the “discreet hero” of his first title of champion of France. He was 61 years old.
“One of the most loyal servants” of PSG
1986: for the first time, the PSG won what was then called D1, the future Ligue 1. In the workforce, a native Lyonnais who arrived from Stade Rémois in 1984: Jean-François Charbonnier. He played 17 matches and scored two goals, recalls PSG, making him “a discreet hero” of the club’s coronation, whose player is “one of the most loyal servants”.
Discreet hero because surrounded by internationals, the former midfielder said he was “used to going unnoticed”, says The team. The sports daily describes a player “elegant in gesture, endowed with an impressive relaxation, hence his second nickname ‘golden head'”.
Jean-François Charbonnier will have played there for seven years. “Jeff”, his nickname, left the club but stayed in the capital: he put his suitcase down Paris FC at 31 years old. He played there until 1997. From 1993, he made his debut as a coach in the club, with the under-17 team.
In 2000, three years after hanging up his crampons, he coached theUS Creteil. Then Jean-François Charbonnier left the Paris region for that of Lyon in 2006. He trained several small clubs, including AS Craponne in 2015, who praised “his kindness”. He ended his career at CS Neuville, before leaving his post, forced to be hospitalized.
