Death of George Floyd. Tribute ceremony begins in Minneapolis

The ceremony in memory of George Floyd, whose death under the knee of a white police officer sparked a deep rage in the United States and around the world, began Thursday in Minneapolis.

Reverend Al Sharpton, a figure in the civil rights movement, is to deliver a funeral eulogy at North Central Christian University in front of dozens of guests including relatives, friends and public figures, while hundreds of people were gathered outside to pay tribute to him.

In the university amphitheater, the golden coffin was surrounded by bouquets of flowers and photos of this African American who died at the age of 46, asphyxiated during his arrest on May 25 in this big city of the State of Minnesota. A large mural with his now famous portrait and his name drawn was visible behind the stage.

Jesse Jackson and Martin Luther King III are in attendance

Among the guests were notably Roxie Washington, the mother of George Floyd’s daughter, Martin Luther King III, the son of the icon of the struggle for the civil rights of the black minority in the United States, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, other community figure, and Minnesota Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar.

George Floyd’s body was taken to university late in the morning. Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo Passes By Hearse had kneed on the ground, a symbolic gesture of the denunciation of police violence against African-Americans.

Another tribute ceremony is scheduled for Saturday in Raeford, in his hometown of North Carolina, and his funeral will take place on Monday in Houston, Texas, where he grew up before joining Minneapolis in the north of the country. The final funeral ceremony will be held in private on Tuesday.
