Born January 21, 1934 in Brussels, François van Hoobrouck had been mayor of Wezembeek-Oppem from 1994 until 2006, then mayor in office. He was one of the three unnamed mayors of the Brussels periphery to have departed from Flemish circulars on the interpretation of language laws when sending electoral summons.
In 2014, he sold his Mayoral scarf to Frédéric Petit (MR). Two years later, he resigned from the municipal council of Wezembeek-Oppem to protest against the “weakness” of his successor in the defense of the French speakers of the municipality with facilities.
François van Hoobrouck had notably founded the association UBCNA (Union Belge Contre les Nuisances des Avions).
His funeral should take place next Wednesday in Wezembeek-Oppem, subject to confirmation, said the current mayor of the commune.
