Death of Farhat Mika Rahel Riyanto Raises Concerns over Athlete Protection at 2023 East Java Provincial Sports Week

Farhat Mika Rahel Riyanto died after competing in boxing at the 2023 East Java Provincial Sports Week (Porprov). Commission X DPR RI raise your voice.

Farhat Mika Rahel Riyanto, who was only 15 years old, died after a duel at the 2023 East Java Province Provincial Event. The unfortunate incident occurred at the Darul Ulum Jombang University Complex on Monday (11/9).

While fighting a boxing athlete from Blitar, Farhat suffered a head bleed. After receiving first aid, Farhat never regained consciousness, and finally died in the early hours of Tuesday (12/9) WIB.

The case attracted attention, reaching the ears of the House of Representatives (DPR). Chairman of Commission X, Syaiful Huda, regretted this incident and also criticized the issue of athlete protection.

“We are very concerned about the death of Farhat’s child while competing in the East Java Porprov event. This case is proof of how weak standard operational procedures (SOP) are for the protection and safety of athletes before, during and after the match,” said the Chairman of Commission X DPR RI Syaiful Huda in the accepted release detikSportThursday (14/9/2023).

What happened Farhat Mika Rahel Riyanto became the focus of Syaiful Huda, because it prolonged a similar case. In fact, the incident did not only occur in boxing, but also in other sports, such as the cases that happened to the late Persela Lamongan goalkeeper Choirul Huda to Akli Fairus from Persiraja Banda Aceh.

“The list of boxing athletes is no less long, such as Muhammad Alfarizi, Donny Maramis, Johanes Fransiskus, Mula Sinaga, Jonnatan Mosse, Jack Ryan, Hendri Bira, Fadly Kasim, Anis Dwi Mulya, Muhammad Fahrizal, Tubagus Setia Sakti, and Hero Tito,” he explained.

Huda said that this case could have been avoided without the SOP being violated. One of them is the existence of human resources (HR) who are capable of managing sports matches.

“All incidents should be anticipated if the match committee has clear SOPs that are supported by qualified human resources. We can see the case of Christian Ericksen, a Danish footballer who collapsed on the field, but was saved because of the alertness of the match officials,” he said.

Finally, Syaiful Huda, who is a politician from the National Awakening Party (PKB), asked the Ministry of Youth and Sports to carry out an investigation. One of them asked for information from East Java Porprov stakeholders, who reportedly did not protect many athletes with BPJS Employment guarantees.

“In fact, all sports administrators are obliged to implement Sports Law 11/2022. Article 100 paragraphs 1 and 2 regarding the provision of social security for sportsmen and sports players,” he stressed.
