Death of Akira Toriyama, Creator of Dragon Ball, Shocks Fans Worldwide

On the night of last Thursday, March 7, the news of the death of Akira Toriyama, recognized worldwide as the creator of one of the most beloved mangas, Dragon Ball, emerged.

The information about his death was disseminated through the official Dragon Ball account on the X platform (previously known as Twitter). The statement detailed that Toriyama had lost his life on March 1 due to an acute stroke.

The studio Bird Studio, on its social networks, expressed its regret by reporting: “We are extremely sorry to report that manga creator Akira Toriyama died on March 1 due to an acute subdural hematoma.”

Likewise, he thanked those who supported his creations, allowing him a career that spanned more than 45 years. In his words: “We inform you of this sad news, with gratitude for your kindness during his lifetime.”

Following the disclosure of his death, the question arose as to the reason for the delay in reporting the news.

Although the details are not precise, the statement clarifies that the funeral was held privately, in the company of his family and a few relatives, in accordance with Toriyama’s wishes for peace.

Regarding the causes of his death, it is known that subdural hematoma, according to the Mayo Clinic, occurs when blood vessels break between the brain and the dura mater, the outermost layer of the three that protect the brain. This situation, which can lead to gradual loss of consciousness and, eventually, death, is usually the result of a serious head injury, as was the case with Toriyama.

The publisher Shueisha, owner of the Shonen Jump magazine, where numerous works by the master were published, expressed its sadness on its website. They highlighted the influence of his mangas, such as Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball, which transcended borders and were loved around the world.

Eiichiro Oda, also a prominent cartoonist and author of One Piece, joined the voices that expressed their condolences.

Oda regretted Toriyama’s departure, considering it premature and leaving “a big void.” He remembered how the master inspired him through his sleeves, becoming a hero ahead of his time, capable of transporting readers to his imaginary universes.
