Death in southern France due to old hurricane Kirk

One person was killed in southern France by ex-Hurricane Kirk. In the port of Sète, near Montpellier, three boats sank due to heavy waves, killing one of the sailors.

All of France had to deal with heavy rain for the sake of the Church. More than thirty areas have been warned that the risk of flooding is high. Wind gusts of up to 150 kilometers per hour were measured in the Pyrenees. More than 64,000 homes were without power last night, most of them living in the south of the country.

Portugal and Spain also had to deal with the ‘named’ hurricane. About 400,000 people in northern Portugal were without power yesterday. Authorities have received approximately 1,600 reports of incidents, including uprooted trees and closed roads.

Kirk will head to Belgium tonight, where Wallonia will be particularly hard hit by heavy rain. The Belgian meteorological institute has announced a code orange for this.

Since Kirk will then move mainly to Germany, he will not affect most of the Netherlands. However, a yellow code is in effect for South Limburg, as locally around 50 mm of rain can fall tonight in the very south of the province.
