Death: Greek national football player dies at the age of 31

Greek international soccer player George Baldock has been found dead at his home. The circumstances are initially unclear.

Greek national soccer player George Baldock has died at the age of 31. Media reported that the Panathinaikos defender was found dead in the pool at his home late on Wednesday evening. The cause of death was initially unknown. According to police circles, forensic medicine will now clarify why and how he died. His club and the authorities were initially alerted by Baldock’s wife, who lives in England and tried in vain to reach him by phone for hours, Greek radio (ERT) reported.

Baldock played 12 times for the Greek national team and last appeared in the pre-European Championship playoffs against Georgia in March, when Greece lost on penalties. He was not called up for the upcoming duel with England in the Nations League this Thursday.

The European Football Union (UEFA) announced that, at the request of the Greek association, a minute’s silence will be held in memory of Baldock both before the game against England at London’s Wembley Stadium and in the home game against Ireland in Piraeus on Sunday. In addition, the players would wear mourning ribbons on their arms.

“There are no words to describe the human pain caused by the news of the untimely loss of one of our young people. This moment requires silence,” said a reaction from the Greek association.

Baldock, who was born in Buckingham, played most of his career in England, including for Sheffield United. The defender only moved to Athens in July. “Sheffield United Football Club is shocked and deeply saddened by the news of the death of our former player, George Baldock,” the club said in a statement. Baldock was very popular with fans, employees and colleagues. The English national team also expressed their condolences on social networks.

Many of his teammates rushed to Baldock’s apartment in the Athens suburb of Glyfada that night, as Greek television showed. “We are shocked and horrified by the loss of our George. The family of Panathinaikos is in mourning,” said a statement from the Greek top club.
