It often happens that construction sites in Germany are finished later than planned. The renovation of the “death crossroads” at Kürnach is different. Initially, the plan was to complete the new roundabout by the end of June, but the roundabout could be opened to traffic again on May 18.
However, only three of the four exits can be used so far. The ST 2260 towards Prosselsheim remains closed because there is another construction site. The road will be renovated over a length of 1700 meters and a further accident focus will be eliminated by flattening the bends.
“So far, the curve has made a strange bend in which it has pushed the cars aside and as a result has repeatedly resulted in serious accidents with fatalities,” said District Administrator Thomas Eberth on site. The focus of the accident is to be eliminated accordingly by the optimized curve radius. Eberth is grateful that the farmers, as property owners, have given up their land for this and that a planning approval procedure has been spared.

This measure, which the Free State of Bavaria pays, costs around 450,000 euros. The district administrator hopes that the construction work will be completed by the end of June so that the traffic can normalize and then other projects in the district, such as the roundabout in Oberpleichfeld, can be implemented.
Gyro construction “bitterly necessary”
The construction of the roundabout was a joint measure of the district of Würzburg and the Free State of Bavaria, said Jan Voll. He is the department head of the State Building Authority and responsible for road construction in the Würzburg district. The construction of the roundabout cost a total of 623,000 euros. The district of Würzburg takes over 313,000 euros of this, but receives additional funding of 165,000 euros from the Free State. Voll is happy that the two detached measures were tackled in one go, which is “of course always optimal from an economic perspective.”
Even before the roundabout was built, attempts had been made to improve traffic safety. According to Eberth, braking thresholds have already been built into the road, screen walls have been built and additional road markings have been recorded, for example to reduce the speed of road users. Nevertheless, accidents occurred repeatedly at the intersection. That is why the local accident commission, in which the police are involved, suggested building the roundabout. “It was not only necessary, it was sorely necessary,” emphasizes Eberth, who lives in Kürnach and at the time promoted the measure as mayor. There have been 33 accidents in the past ten years alone.
Now Eberth is happy that despite the corona pandemic, the gyroscope was completed a month earlier than planned.
