Dean and Dan Caton Celebrate 5 Years of Dsquared2 in Sofia, Bulgaria | Exclusive Interview with the Designers

Dressed alike in blue jeans with ankle patches, clean white t-shirts and black jackets with an engraved green logo on the left – this is how identical twins Dean and Dan Caton, creators and designers of Dsquared2, appeared at the brand’s boutique in Sofia to celebrate 5 years since its creation. The two Canadians arrived in Bulgaria from London, where they currently live.

Only in our country, next to the store of the brand, there is also an establishment with its name, which meets the standards of the brand. This is also one of the reasons that tipped the balance and helped the blue-eyed brothers to choose to approach the border of Bulgaria.

Our celebrities also honored the brand’s celebration. Singers Galena, Mihaela Marinova and Dara Ekimova attended the refined celebration. BTV’s beautiful weather forecaster Nathalie Trifonova was also there, wearing an elegant black midi dress. Each of the invited guests wore a Dsquared2 garment or accessory. Most of them also brought their stylists and makeup artists to browse the brand’s spring-summer collection together.

This is the first time that Dean and Dan Caton come to our country and speak to Bulgarian journalists. They told the media that everyone seems very warm-hearted, and that they are satisfied with the work done by the Bulgarian team representing the brand in our country, and they are here to support it. And when PR expert Maxim Behar asked how they would describe our country in three words, they jokingly answered: “We just arrived here. We will tell you tomorrow”, although their time is very limited and the planned program strictly selected. Heavy security guarded the boutique of the luxury brand during the event. Later in the evening, the celebration moved to the capital’s venue of the same name, and among the guests were the Bulgarian music star Lili Ivanova, Dimitar Berbatov, as well as Galena, who rocked the dance floor together with Dean Keaton to the song Ain’t Nobody Loves Me Better.

Designers Dean and Dan Keaton were born in Toronto. The two grew up in the Canadian neighborhood of Willowdale. Their father is Italian and they have a total of 7 siblings. Already in 1983, when they went to study at the Parsons School of Design in New York, their path to the world of fashion was already mapped out. They only stay there for one semester, then they go back to Toronto. 8 years later, the Canadian duo moved to Italy to create their own brand. After collaborating with some of the most famous fashion houses, including Gianni Versace, Ports 1961 and the Diesel brand, Dean and Dan Caton present their first men’s collection under the Dsquared2 logo. And in 2000-2001, Madonna commissioned the brothers to create over 150 items for her Drowned World Tour 2001 and the Don’t Tell Me music video. The Dsquared2 philosophy is what makes the brand so successful. The designers manage to perfectly combine “Canadian iconography with refined Italian tailoring and playful sensuality.” And their collections are a mix of sports and glamor, casualness and extravagance, they write on the brand’s official website.

These days, Dean and Dan Keaton split their lives between Milan and London. The Dsquared2 collections are produced in Italy, which also gives reason for the brand’s motto “Born in Canada, Made in Italy”.

The word they use to describe fashion is “individuality”. The concept of their spring-summer collection revolves around it. And it is life that inspires them to create. And since fashion is all about expressing yourself, the two believe it’s important to rediscover that teenage courage that helps you be bolder.

Brothers: We work from the heart, we don’t give so much free rein to the brain

– Dean and Dan Keaton, there are many successful brands in the world, and yours is certainly among the most loved and recognizable. How have you managed to stay on top over the years amidst so much competition in fashion?

– We believe that if you do anything from the heart, it will bring you luck. And we love what we do. We work from the heart, we don’t give so much free rein to the brain.

– No matter what business you run, there are always good and bad moments. When was the most difficult period for Dsquared2?

– The difficult part was at the very beginning, launching the brand. But we grew and flourished smoothly. So there was no point where we went from super high to super low. Of course there were bad moments with the pandemic and so on, but it was a world drama. We think that we are quite stable and consistent, which is also the positive in this case.
