No matter where each of us lives – in an apartment, a terraced house or a private house – we will always have to deal with neighbors to some extent, with whom we can do great things, but just as well we can not do well. And although we live in Finland more quietly than I have ever lived, I have never had so many complaints about my existence.
In all three places where we live in Finland, we have had several adventures with neighbors. The worst was probably in Hamina, where the apartment and the house had very poor sound insulation. We could always hear what the neighbors were saying in the kitchen and when someone sneezed. And it was in that apartment that one night I got very sick – so much that I tried to get rid of it all night in the toilet. Judging by the consequences, the neighbors had heard my activities. The next morning, the entrance foyer of the entire house was decorated with huge signs on the doors, walls and elevator. They said that it was not accepted to make noise at night in this house and that the children of a neighbor woke up at night from the noise and could no longer fall asleep. Out of my nausea, they inflated a huge elephant and took it as a regular activity with the evil intention of waking up all the residents of the house. The neighbors did not even bother to find out the reason for the noise and did not come to talk to us. Instead, they went to complain to the chairman of the cooperative.
Hamina’s worst cases of “complaining” were when my friend and I decided to make love in our bedroom after 10 p.m. Then, at the most wrong moment, the neighbors always pounded on the wall where our headboard was. They pounded very relentlessly and for a long time until we fell silent. Even though I loved that apartment, I am glad that we don’t live there anymore, precisely because of the neighbors’ eternal complaints.
