Deaf people don’t hear fire alarms – rescue mission

In Düsseldorf, a deaf couple was lucky in misfortune: the apartment of the two had gone up in flames – but they could not hear the fire alarm. A neighbor may have saved the couple’s life.

On Wednesday night, an apartment caught fire on Haus-Endt-Strasse in Urdenbach. The Düsseldorf fire brigade describes this on Wednesday. “When we arrived at the scene, the warning tone of the detector could be heard clearly,” said the fire brigade.

A neighbor informed the emergency services that two people were still in the apartment – but they did not react. The firefighters then forced their way into the apartment: there was a flower arrangement on fire, the apartment was already full of smoke. However, even the operation could not wake up the sleeping residents – as it turned out, they were deaf and were only woken up by the emergency services. Paramedics examined the two rescued for smoke inhalation.

“It is only thanks to the attentiveness of the neighbor who had heard the warning tone of the detector that the deaf couple remained unharmed and the fire did not spread,” said the Düsseldorf fire brigade. She warns: With special smoke detectors, deaf people can be woken up by flashes of light or vibration in an emergency.

After the use of a ventilation device, the two residents were able to return to their apartment. After about 60 minutes, the mission was over.
