At least fourteen people have been killed in Ukrainian shelling on the Russian city of Belgorod. This was reported by the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations. Two children are said to be among the dead.
In addition, according to Russia, 108 people were injured in Belgorod, which is about thirty kilometers from the Ukrainian border. Images from the Russian news agency RIA show, among other things, burnt-out cars.
According to the Russians, it was an “indiscriminate attack by the regime in Kyiv”, including Czech-made Vampire missiles. Russia wants the UN Security Council to meet to discuss the matter.
Ukraine has not claimed responsibility for the attack, but rarely does so in cases like this. However, sources tell Ukrainian media that it is in retaliation for yesterday’s large-scale Russian attacks.
39 deaths
Yesterday, several Ukrainian cities were hit by Russian airstrikes. According to the Ukrainian air force, it was the largest attack since the outbreak of war almost two years ago.
Ukrainian President Zelensky has now announced that the death toll from yesterday has risen to 39 people. 159 people were injured and 120 towns and villages were hit by the attacks, he said.
