An unknown person sent a turtle to the turtle sanctuary in Harkema. According to the shelter, the animal was seriously ill and wet from its own urine.
According to Gerard van der Wijk of the Netherlands Turtle Shelter Foundation, sometimes a turtle is placed in a box in front of the shelter door. But having an animal mailed has never happened before.
“This was an unpleasant surprise,” says Van der Wijk. “The turtle was wrapped in a towel so it couldn’t move. The animal was all wet with urine and covered in mucus and snot.”
Unknown sender
It looks like the animal has been on a post trip for a day. The yellow-eared slider has now received antibiotics and has been examined by a veterinarian.
“But it is not yet certain that he will make it,” says Van der Wijk. “We will see in a few days”. A fundraiser to help the animal he has already raised a few hundred euros.
It is not known who sent the turtle. The front desk calls the sender to report. The foundation also wants to try to find out where the animal comes from via PostNL. The postal company has announced that it is forbidden to transport live animals by post.
According to PostNL, it is best for the shelter to contact the police to find out who the sender is.
