Gang war: Eight dead in a shooting in northern Mexico

Eight people were killed and one injured on Wednesday in a shootout between suspected criminals in Guachochi, in the northern Mexican state of Chihuaha, authorities said.

In March 2023, the “Caballo Blanco” ultramarathon takes place under the supervision of a state police officer in the Tarahumara mountains of the state of Chihuahua, where clashes between rival gangs are increasing (photo by drawing).

The facts took place on a path in a remote mountainous area, where natives of the Tarahumara ethnic group live and through which transits drug trafficking towards the United States, the prosecution said in a press release.

Eight people were found dead, three of them charred, and an injured man was taken to hospital. Two burnt-out vans were also found at the scene.

Sinaloa cartel

According to local media, the clash was between rival cells of the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the most powerful drug trafficking organizations in Mexico. According to the Chihuahua state press, armed clashes have been increasing for several weeks in the Guachochi region, and many families have fled the city, which has around 14,500 inhabitants.

In 2022, in Cerocahui, another city in the same region, two Jesuit priests and a tourist guide were shot dead in a church. The guide, who had been kidnapped, managed to escape and took refuge in the church, but was caught by a killer who shot him and the two monks.
