Two people were killed in Bulgaria this weekend due to severe weather. Heavy wind, rain and snow cause major problems in the country. Several villages and towns have problems with the electricity supply.
On Saturday, police said a man was killed after his van hit a fallen tree on a major boulevard in the capital Sofia. In Varna, on the Black Sea, a woman died when a branch fell on her.
Residents of eastern Bulgaria, which was hardest hit by the storm, say AP that they have never experienced weather like this before.
A state of emergency has been declared in Varna. According to local officials, the extreme weather poses serious risks to the population of the port city. There are problems with the power supply in various parts of the city. Roads are also blocked due to fallen trees. Residents are urged to stay at home.
Bulgarian meteorologists warned on Sunday of dangerous weather in most of eastern Bulgaria, with wind gusts of up to 125 kilometers per hour. The heavy rain is expected to turn to snow due to falling temperatures.
