A police shootout with a drug gang occurred in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Seven people were reported dead.
The shooting incident occurred on Tuesday (27/2) local time. Police are targeting members of the Commando Vermelho narcotics gang.
“Seven criminals were killed in clashes with our team,” Rio military police were reported as saying AFPWednesday (28/2/2024).
The dead victims were members of the Commando Vermelho gang. Two policemen were also reportedly injured in the incident.
“Five firearms, three pistols, seven radios and narcotics were confiscated and will be accounted for. In addition, three suspects were injured and two were arrested,” said Rio military police.
Police operations against organized crime are considered commonplace in Rio. This operation also often resulted in shootouts.
Presidential Administration Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has announced a $180 million plan to fight organized crime over the next three years. In August 2023, police raids in favelas across Brazil left 44 people dead in less than a week.
