Deadly ‘Legionnaires’ Disease’ Outbreak in Polish City Rzeszow: 7 Deaths and 100+ Infected

Details: Rzeszow in southeastern Poland has been a key transit hub for international military support for Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion last year. About 10,000 US military personnel are also stationed in the region.

Employees of the Internal Security Agency inspected various facilities in Rzeszow, but primarily the water supply, where, according to experts, bacteria could have entered.

Stanislav Zharin, Deputy Coordinating Minister of the Polish Intelligence Services, said that one of the reasons for the check is Russia’s attempts to sow “panic” among Ukraine’s allies.

“This is the factor that forced us (to take action) to rule out some scenarios,” Zharin said.

At least 113 residents were infected in Rzeszow. Seven of the deceased were elderly and suffered from chronic diseases. City officials and experts say this is an unusual situation.

At a crisis meeting on Thursday, the city authorities decided to disinfect more than 1,000 kilometers of Rzeszow’s water pipes with chlorine and ozone, which will take place on Saturday. Authorities have instructed residents to soak the water so that it loses some of the chlorine and then boil it before drinking. They assured that the level of chlorine to be used would be safe for humans.

Legionnaires’ disease is a lung infection that is spread through inhalation of infected water splashes rather than through drinking water. It usually occurs in places such as hotels, hospitals, or offices where bacteria enter the plumbing system, such as through air conditioning systems or faucets and showers that are not often used.
