Heavy Rains and Landslides Claim Over 40 Lives in Himachal Pradesh, India
New Delhi, India – Heavy rains and landslides have wreaked havoc in the Northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, resulting in the tragic loss of more than 40 lives. According to India’s state-broadcaster DD, the devastating incident occurred on Monday.
Among the victims, at least nine people lost their lives when flooding caused a temple in the state capital Shimla, a popular tourist area, to collapse. The incident took place at approximately 8 a.m. local time, as confirmed by the state’s chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu during a visit to the temple site on Monday, as reported by Indian news agency ANI.
Efforts to retrieve the bodies of the deceased have been underway, with Sukhu posting on X (previously known as Twitter) on Monday that the “local administration is diligently working to clear the debris.” While five individuals have been successfully rescued, approximately 20 to 25 people remain trapped, prompting ongoing rescue operations.
The death toll across Himachal Pradesh on Monday has reached at least 41, leaving the nation in a state of distress. India’s home affairs minister Amit Shah expressed his condolences on social media, stating that the loss of life was “extremely distressing.” He further added that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are actively engaged in relief and rescue operations alongside the local administration.
Sukhu also took to X on Monday, assuring the affected families that authorities have been directed to provide all possible assistance and support during this challenging period. He appealed to the public to stay indoors and avoid venturing near rivers and landslide-prone areas.
In light of the ongoing heavy rain, traffic police officials have urged the public to refrain from traveling. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for the state, warning of the severe weather conditions.
Videos and images circulating on social media depict the extent of the destruction, with roads in ruins, fallen trees, and water gushing down mountains, causing massive rocks to fly through the air.
Himachal Pradesh has been one of the worst-affected states during this monsoon season. In July, more than 30 people lost their lives due to flash floods and landslides in the region.
Scientists have raised concerns that the human-caused climate crisis is contributing to the increasingly chaotic and erratic monsoon seasons in India.
