Tragedy Strikes: Deadly Landslide in Yunnan Claims Lives and Leaves Many Missing
In a devastating turn of events, a deadly landslide struck two villages in the mountainous Zhengxiong County of southwestern Yunnan, China. The predawn disaster occurred on Monday morning, catching many residents off guard as they slept peacefully in their homes. As rescue efforts intensify, the death toll has risen to at least 20, with 24 people still missing.
Witnesses recount the horrifying moment when the mountain collapsed, burying homes and trapping dozens of people beneath the rubble. Gu, a witness who lost four relatives in the landslide, described the chaos that unfolded. “They were all sleeping in their homes,” he said, his voice filled with grief. The disaster struck without warning, leaving families shattered and communities in shock.
Rescue workers are now engaged in a race against time to locate and save those still missing. The subzero temperatures that followed the landslide have only added to the urgency of the situation. The two affected villages were situated at the foot of these mountains, and more than 500 residents were evacuated following the catastrophe.
Images broadcasted by state media show rescue workers braving the harsh conditions, climbing over concrete blocks and collapsed roofs dusted with snow in their desperate search for survivors. Among those fortunate enough to escape the landslide was Luo Dongmei, who was awakened by her brother just in time. “They said there was a landslide and the bed was shaking, so they rushed upstairs and woke us up,” she recounted. Luo and her family, along with many other residents, were evacuated to a nearby school.
However, not everyone has been accounted for. Luo anxiously waits for news of her sister and aunt, who lived closer to the site of the landslide. “The only thing I can do is to wait,” she said, her voice filled with uncertainty and fear.
This tragic event comes at a time when Yunnan and several other provinces in China are experiencing bitterly cold temperatures. Just last week, tourists were evacuated from a remote skiing area in northwestern China due to dozens of avalanches triggered by heavy snow. These natural disasters have disrupted the lives of countless individuals, highlighting the unpredictable and dangerous nature of winter weather.
As investigations into the cause of the landslide continue, it is important to note that landslides are not uncommon in China.
