In the United States, more than 60 million Americans are affected by “extreme heat” alerts in northern Florida and southern New Mexico. Temperatures are rising, approaching 40 degrees.

An intense heat wave has enveloped the southern United States for the past few days. In Louisiana, rare are those who venture outside in broad daylight, unless there is a water point where they can cool off a bit. “It’s too hot to be outside with the children. Just walking makes you sweat. If it weren’t for these facilities, we would stay at home all the time”says a mother.

11 deaths in Texas

100° fahrenheit in Texas is 38°C, enough to bake cookies on a dashboard, eight hours of baking all the same. This Texan is having fun, but the heat worries the authorities. With a very high humidity level, the perceived temperatures can exceed 45° in the shade with a real health risk. This heat wave is rare in its duration and extent in the southern United States: 38° in Dallas, 37° in Louisiana and 34° in Florida, it is exceptional so early in the summer. “This is the strongest heat alert we have seen before July”, says Jacob Syringe, meteorologist. In all, 11 deaths have been recorded in the state of Texas alone.
