Eight people were killed in a head-on collision near Batesville, Texas. According to the police, the accident happened when officers chased a car in the early morning, which they suspected was driven by a human smuggler. They would try to bring people into the US illegally. Batesville is located near the border with Mexico.
The driver drove away from the police at high speed, tried to overtake a truck and collided with an oncoming passenger car. All occupants of the car were killed: the driver and five passengers, including people from Honduras, police said. Two American occupants of the oncoming car also did not survive the collision.
Accidents following police pursuits of human smugglers are more common in US states bordering Mexico. In 2021, 13 people died in a similar accident in California, a year later four people were killed near the Texas town of Encinal. The Federal Border Guard therefore advised agents earlier this year to exercise restraint in pursuing suspected human smugglers.
