Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says bluntly that the country is now at war. It happens after Hamas on Saturday morning first sent thousands of missiles against Israeli cities before militant members of the organization moved in and took hostages. On Sunday evening, more than 700 Israelis were killed and more than 2,000 injured in the attacks. According to Israeli media, rescue teams have found 260 dead in a festival area in southern Israel. Israel has warned of heavy retaliation and has already attacked Gaza from the air. Over 413 Palestinians have died and more than 2,300 injured, according to the health authorities in the country. At a bus stop it is quiet. An overturned shopping bag and a handbag lie haphazardly scattered on the pavement. In the small area lie seven women and men. They are civilians, and they have been killed.

These descriptions are taken from photos and videos taken in Sderot on Saturday morning.

Sderot is a small town northeast of the border with Gaza. Usually things are quiet in the small town, where around 30,000 people live.

On Saturday, Hamas fighters entered from Gaza. They drove around in a big car and killed several civilians. Defense spokesman Jonatan Conricus described them as terrorists and “bloodthirsty” on the night of Monday.

How many people have been killed in the city is currently unclear.

The fighting continues

– There are corpses on the ground… Terrible and serious images, scenes that are difficult to describe.

An Israeli TV reporter in Channel 12 said so on Saturday. He stressed that the victims had been killed in gunfire by Hamas soldiers who infiltrated the city from Gaza, not by rockets.

The mayor of the city, Alon Davidi, describes the attacks as a “massacre of innocent civilians everywhere”.

The fighting did not stop on Saturday. On Sunday morning, Hamas claimed that its fighters were still involved in a number of locations.

Fighting is reportedly still ongoing on Sunday in Sderot, Ofakim, Yad Mordechai, Kfar Azza, Be’eri, Yatid and Kissufim. All these places are close to the border with Gaza.

On Saturday afternoon, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu came out and said that the security cabinet has officially declared that the country is at war. It allows for taking “significant military steps”.

Hundreds of Palestinians are said to have already been killed in Israeli airstrikes against the Gaza Strip. In addition, thousands are said to be injured.

British-Israeli Ben (52) tells Sky News that he hid in a small security room, which can only be opened from the inside, for over 12 hours.

At one point, Hamas fighters are said to have entered the residence of the married couple, which is located in Kibbutz Be’eri about five kilometers from the border with Gaza.

– They were only a few centimeters from me, while I held the door shut. I was cold and sweating profusely, he says.

A short time later, the Hamas fighters are said to have left the home, which is said to have then started to burn. As a result of the fire, the seal on the door must have melted, and thick smoke must have started seeping into the security room, according to the 52-year-old.

– It was so hot, incredibly hot. I don’t understand how we didn’t pass out, says Ben, who describes the experience as “hell”.

Hours later, Israeli forces are said to have taken the couple out of the home.

– I was terrified

In connection with the attack, over a hundred people are said to have been captured and transported to Gaza. 21-year-old Gaya Kalderon speaks up Sky News that her father, sister and brother were captured in their home in Kibbutz Nir Oz, in southern Israel.

– I was terrified, she says of when she received text messages from her sister on Saturday morning.

– I don’t know what has happened to my father, who raised me and my siblings, whom I have tried to protect all my life. And now I can’t do anything.
