The number of fatalities in forest fires terrible that scorched a city on Hawaiithe United States has increased to more than 100 people on Tuesday (15/8) local time.
“101 lives have now been lost,” said Josh Green, adding to the two tolls that have slowly climbed over the past few days.
Reported by the news agency AFPBy Wednesday (16/8/2023), more than a quarter of the disaster zone had been searched, Green said, with dogs trained to search bodies, combing through ash from what was formerly Lahaina, a scenic tourist spot on Maui.
Green has repeatedly warned that the final death toll from the tragedy will be much higher. He said that the figure could be two or three times the current amount.
The high number of victims has made forest fires it is the deadliest in the United States for over a century.
Hawaii Governor Josh Green likened the situation in the city of Lahaina to a ‘war zone’. As reported by Reuters, Monday (14/8/2023), the city of Lahaina was shrouded in devastation after a fast-moving fire ravaged this area of Maui’s northwest coast since Tuesday (8/8) last week. The continuing fires razed much of the historic resort town and scorched everything in its path.
Days after the fire started, firefighters were still battling the blaze. A number of sniffer dogs searched for victims who might have been crushed by the charred ruins of the city, while local officials were shocked by the sheer scale of the disaster.
