However, the number of dead found in areas affected by the floods is undetermined, the head of the Valencia region told reporters early Wednesday morning.

Torrential rains caused by a cold front moving in the south and east of the country have resulted in flooding of entire cities with the authorities issuing a red alert asking citizens to stay at home and avoid any unnecessary movement.
“I am informed with concern about the information about missing people and damage caused by the storm in the last hours,” Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said via X, also calling on citizens to follow the instructions of the authorities. “Be very careful and avoid useless movements,” he stressed.
Spain’s state meteorological agency AEMET declared a red alert in the eastern region of Valencia, with some areas such as Turris and Utiel recording 200mm of rain.

Dozens of videos shared on social media appear to show people trapped in floodwaters, several hanging from trees to avoid being swept away.
Other footage showed firefighters using long-line rescue helicopters to help people trapped in the water. A viral video appeared to capture a tornado, a relatively rare occurrence in Spain.
Reuters could not immediately verify the authenticity of the videos.
Radio and television stations received hundreds of calls for help from citizens trapped in flooded areas or searching for loved ones, as emergency services could not reach all affected areas.
“If (emergency services) have not arrived, it is not because of a lack of means or predisposition, but because of an access problem,” Mazon said, adding that access to some areas was “absolutely impossible”.
Scientists say extreme weather events are becoming more frequent due to climate change. Meteorologists believe that the warming of the Mediterranean Sea, which increases the evaporation of water, plays a key role in making the torrential rains more intense.
