Jakarta –
Eight people are reported to have died as a result of flooding in the Kherson region, Ukraine occupied by Russia. The water is said to have continued to rise because of the collapse of the main Kakhovka dam due to the war.
“Unfortunately, there are fatalities… Their number has increased to eight people,” the head of the Moscow-installed Kherson region, Vladimir Balance, said via Telegram.
Balance said that the water that inundated 22,273 houses in 17 settlements continued to increase. “Keep going up to ten days,” he said.
He said more than 5,800 people had been evacuated since the floods hit on Tuesday. A total of 243 of them were children.
Balance accuses troops Ukraine shelling the area thus “complicated the work of rescuers.”
Meanwhile, AFP journalists in the Ukrainian-held city of Kherson and surrounding areas reported shelling that appeared to have come from Russian positions.
Known, Russia and Ukraine blamed each other for the destruction of the Russian-controlled dam on the Dnipro river.
