Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said flooding destroyed a campsite in Turkey’s northwestern Kirklareli province near the Bulgarian border, leaving two holidaymakers dead and four others missing. There were about 12 vacationers in the campsite at that time.
In Istanbul, streets and houses flooded in two districts, killing at least two people, the city’s governor said. About 10 people were rescued from the library where they were trapped. Several metro stations were closed. Istanbul Governor Davut Gil called on motorcyclists to stay at home.
In Greece, police banned traffic in the town of Vola, in the Pelion mountain area and on the island of Skiathos. One man was killed near Wall when a wall fell on him. Five people are missing and may have been swept away by floodwaters.
Authorities warned people via mobile phone messages to limit movement outside their homes in several other areas of central Greece, the Sporades and the island of Evia.
In the Pilion mountain area, rivers burst their banks and carried cars into the sea, rock avalanches blocked roads, a small bridge was swept away by the current, and power was cut in many places.
The storms follow wildfires that have raged across Greece in recent weeks, killing more than 20 people.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov said two people had died and three were missing after the storm caused flooding along the Black Sea coast. Overflowing rivers caused severe damage to roads and bridges.
Strong winds created waves two meters high on beaches and flooded streets and houses in coastal resorts.
Authorities declared a state of emergency in the southern resort town of Tsarev and urged people to move to upper floors after the first floors of some hotels flooded.
