Deadly Flooding in Slovenia: Two Dutch Citizens and One Slovenian Killed | Power Outages, Road Closures, and Flooding Reported

Two Dutch people were killed in floods in Slovenia. The country has been hit by extreme rainfall in the past 24 hours.

It concerns two men, confirms the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. One person from Slovenia also died in the floods, the Slovenian news agency reports STA. The exact cause of death of the three victims is not yet known.

The police are investigating. According to the Slovenian news site N1 are the Dutch men found in the mountains near the town of Kranj. They may have been struck by lightning.

The ministry has not provided any further details on the identities of the victims. The relatives receive help.

Power outages, road closures and flooded buildings

Several parts of Slovenia, which is a popular holiday destination, have been hit by very heavy rainfall. The most rain fell in the north. Numerous roads and several rail connections have been closed there.

At least 16,000 households are without power. A number of border crossings with neighboring Austria, such as the Ljubelj mountain pass, have also been closed, according to local media.

The situation is said to be worst around the village of Skofja Loka, northwest of the capital Ljubljana. More than 100 buildings have been flooded. A military helicopter was called in to evacuate people from their homes.

More than 10 centimeters of rain fell in 24 hours, the amount that usually falls in a month, according to Slovenian authorities. Rescue services have been called into action more than a thousand times in the past twelve hours. The rain is expected to continue for at least another day.

No large numbers of reports have been received from Dutch people who need help. The Eurocross emergency service has received about thirty reports, including from people who had to leave their campsite.
