Deadly Flooding Devastates New York State, Declaring State of Emergency

Heavy rains fell Sunday in New York state, causing “life-threatening” floods that turned roads into waterways that swept away bridges, prompting authorities to declare a state of emergency.
A woman was killed while trying to leave her home with her dog in the Hudson Valley when it was swept away, according to media reports.

By Sunday evening, more than 12,000 customers had lost power, her office said.
Heavy rain flooded roads and trapped citizens in their cars and homes.

The National Weather Service said it was receiving multiple reports of severe flooding and people stranded in vehicles in eastern Orange County.
It warned drivers to be careful.

Since 20:00 (24:00 GMT), highways have been submerged in at least five counties, including Westchester County, which borders New York City in the north and borders the Hudson River.
The governor’s office said the state should prepare for more storms Monday.
“Heavy rains caused by slow thunderstorms are expected to continue to cause flash floods and moderate to isolated flooding of rivers tonight until Monday,” he added.
