NEW YORK — Two people were found dead in an apartment after firefighters put out a building fire in Manhattan’s Chinatown neighborhood early Friday, authorities said.
Firefighters responding to a call at the Mulberry Street building around 3:45 am found flames on the fifth floor, Deputy Deputy Chief John Sarrocco said.
A 91-year-old woman was found in the apartment in critical condition. Firefighters were able to transport her to a hospital where she ultimately died from her injuries.
His 52-year-old son was found dead in the apartment. The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.
Firefighters said significant clutter and debris inside the residence made a rescue difficult.
Two other civilians were taken to hospitals with minor injuries, as were two firefighters. One of the firefighters fell partially down a collapsed ladder, authorities said.
It is not yet clear how the fire started. An investigation is ongoing.
