At least 25 people were killed and dozens injured Monday evening in an explosion followed by a fire at a gas station in the Russian Republic of Dagestan, located in the Caucasus region.
The Russian Emergencies Ministry said that the fire extends over a distance of about 600 square meters, adding that 260 firefighters are working to combat it.
She noted that the Russian authorities sent a medical plane Il-76 to Makhachkala to evacuate the seriously wounded to Moscow.
The disaster occurred at 21:40 (18:40 GMT) on a federal road, said Dagestan leader Sergei Melikhov. “Work is underway to clarify the causes and type of the explosion,” he added on Telegram.
The Russian newspaper “Izvestia” on Telegram quoted a witness as saying that the fire broke out in an area where cars were parked, and spread to the gas station. The unnamed witness added, “After the explosion, everything fell on our heads, and we no longer saw anything.”
A video clip, published by the RIA Novosti agency on Telegram, shows a huge explosion that followed the fire.
