Deadly Earthquakes Strike Colombia, Leaving One Person Dead

At least one person is reported dead.

Both earthquakes struck in the middle of the day and were centered about 160 kilometers southeast of Bogotá. The US Geological Survey (USGS) estimated the magnitude of the first earthquake at 6.3, and the aftershock at 5.7. Later on Thursday evening, another magnitude five earthquake shook Colombia.

In the capital, residents felt buildings sway and alarms went off. People rushed to leave the buildings and gathered in the streets.

Bogota’s fire department reported that one person died after jumping from the building’s seventh floor in panic. Several people got stuck in elevators and the fire department received dozens of calls.

In the House of Representatives of Colombia, stone ornaments fell from the ceiling onto the seats of legislators, but no one was in the room at the time.

The earthquake was also felt in other major Colombian cities, including Medellin and Cali.
