Deadly Earthquake Rocks Afghanistan – 120 Reported Dead | Jakarta News

Jakarta

An earthquake with a magnitude (M) of 6.3 rocked Afghanistan. As many as 120 people were reported to have died as a result of this earthquake.

Reported by AFP, Sunday (8/10/2023), the United States Geological Survey said the epicenter of the earthquake was 40 kilometers (25 miles) northwest of the region’s largest city, Herat. This earthquake occurred on Saturday (7/10) morning local time and was followed by eight aftershocks with strengths between 4.3 and 6.3.

“So far, more than 1,000 injured women, children and elderly citizens have been included in our records, and around 120 people have lost their lives,” Mosa Ashari, Head of Herat Province Disaster Management, told AFP.

Crowds of residents left buildings in Herat at around 11.00 when the earthquake started.

“We were in the office and suddenly the building started shaking,” Bashir Ahmad, a 45-year-old resident, told AFP.

He said the plaster was starting to fall off and the walls were cracking. He added part of the wall and part of the building collapsed.

“I can’t contact my family, the network connection is down. I’m too worried and scared, it’s terrible,” he said.

Moments after the earthquake struck, men, women and children stood in the wide streets, far from the tall buildings. They remained cautious about returning home as aftershocks rumbled for hours.

“The situation is very scary, I have never experienced anything like this,” said Idrees Arsala, a 21-year-old student who was the last person to evacuate his class safely when the quake began.
