At least 69 people were killed by an earthquake in Nepal on Friday. Dozens of others were injured. According to Nepalese measurements, the quake had a magnitude of 6.4.
The overnight earthquake struck the western part of Jajarkot, a hilly area with 190,000 inhabitants, about 500 kilometers west of the capital Kathmandu.
It is currently not possible to contact Ramidanda, the epicenter of the earthquake. Deaths have been reported in several parts of the area, but the number is expected to rise further.
Rescue and search teams wanting to reach affected areas must first clear roads blocked by landslides caused by the quake. At least twenty people were taken to hospital with injuries. Several homes and roads have been damaged.
Nepal’s National Seismological Center said the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.4, but the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) later downgraded the magnitude to 5.7 and the US Geological Survey estimated it at a magnitude of 5.6. According to witnesses, the tremors could be felt as far as New Delhi in India.
Nepal experiences earthquakes more often. In 2015, around nine thousand people were killed by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8. Entire cities, ancient temples and other historic sites were reduced to rubble, and more than a million homes were destroyed.
